How Email Sender Reputation Gets Damaged

If you are not following the basic rules of the game then  you are sure to taint your ip address and thus your ip reputation.  To test you reputation you can visit https://talosintelligence.com/reputation_center

  1. Never send an email campaign to a list which you don’t trust . Make sure you clean your list so your bounce rate is in an acceptable range which is 10-15%.
  2.  Follow some of the basic principle if you are mailing using a vps servers . Make sure all the domain setting provided below is configure and working properly .
  • If you want maximum email deliverability then you have to choose an Email Service Provider that has DMARC Authentications.
  • DMARC Stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance, DMARC makes use of SPF & DKIM standards for email authentication.

  • DMARC is an email authentication protocol that is used to give email domain owners the ability to protect their domain from unauthorized practices like email spoofing, phishing email, email scams, etc.
  • DMARC has to be added in DNS ( Domain Name System ) once it is done then the receiving email server can authenticate the incoming email according to the instructions published by the domain owner within the DNS entry.
  • DMARC uses 3 mechanisms SPF,DKIM & Alignment that if the mail passes these authentications then the mail will be delivered, if not then the action will be taken depend on the instruction held in the DMARC record. Email could be delivered, quarantined or rejected.
  • Now let’s get into what are DKIM, SPF & Alignment
  • SPF stands for Sender Policy Framework it is a form of authentication process which assures the Reciever that the mail was sent from an authorized mail server.Using SPF you can strictly state which IP Addresses are authorized to send emails from your Domain. While setting up SPF, which happens to be very easy; Domain Owner can add a file or record on the server which if need be the server’s on the recipient’s end can cross-check.
  • Using this process the email receiver can make sure that the Mail thus received is intended for him from the right domain owner and the E-mail isn’t forged.
  • DKIM stands for DomainKeys Identified Mail DKIM presents a business and enterprise side of Email Authentication. With DKIM or DomainKeys Identified Mail, an organization or an enterprise can claim responsibility or a mail which is been sent by them which can then be validated by the recipient.DKIM is also a form of Email Authentication used on a large scale which uses “Public Key Cryptography”.
  • How DKIM works is really simple as it adds a Digital Signature to the header section of an Email Message.

  • Alignment: DMARC operates by checking that the domain in the message’s From: field is “aligned” with other authenticated domain names.
  • If either SPF or DKIM alignment checks pass, then the DMARC alignment test passes. The email can fail even if it passes SKF or DKIM but Alignment fails.

The above are things should be taken care of from the Email Service Provider’s side.
